How to use the solver
The tool works for any five-letter guessing puzzle that gives colored feedback, including Wordle-style games. Enter what you have learned so far:
- Green boxes. Put a letter in a box when you know it belongs in exactly that position.
- Yellow boxes. If a letter is in the word but was in the wrong spot, type it in the box for the spot where it did not belong. You can put several letters in one box. The solver will require the letter somewhere else in the word.
- Also in the word. Use this field for letters you know are present but whose position you have not narrowed down.
- Gray letters. List letters that were marked as absent. If you list a letter that is also green or yellow, the solver keeps it, because repeated letters can show up gray when the word has fewer copies than you guessed.
The result updates as you type. You will see how many words remain and a short list of the best next guesses, plus an expandable list of every candidate.
Worked example
With no clues at all, the solver ranks every word in the list. Each word scores the number of list words that share each of its distinct letters, added together:
No clues: 3,603 words Best scores: arose 6,934, laser 6,842, reals 6,842 For comparison: eerie scores 3,792 (only 3 distinct letters)
Now suppose you guessed crane and learned that A is green in the third box, R is yellow (it is in the word, but not second) and C, N and E are gray. Put a in the third green box, r in the second yellow box and cne in the gray field:
Remaining: 32 words Top of the list: roast 101, roads 100, roams 96, shard 96, stair 96 Other survivors: smart, boars, stark, roars, sharp, soars ...
Thirty-two words is still a lot, so the next guess should split them well rather than gamble on one.
How the ranking works
After filtering, the solver counts how many of the remaining words contain each letter. A word then scores the sum of those counts for its distinct letters. Words made of letters that appear in many other candidates score highest, because guessing them tells you the most about the rest of the list. Repeated letters add nothing extra, which is why arose outranks eerie before any clue is entered.
This is a simple frequency heuristic, not a full information-theory search. It only suggests words that could still be the answer, so it never proposes a throwaway probe word that cannot win, and it does not know which words a particular game picks as answers.
About the word list
The solver searches a list of 3,603 five-letter English words that we generated for this site. It was not copied from any game, dictionary or published word list, and we have not checked it against one, so we cannot say how closely it matches any game's answers or accepted guesses. That has two consequences. First, a valid guess may be missing from the list, particularly rare words and some inflections. Second, the list contains some words your game may reject, such as coeds and reals. If the solver says nothing matches, double-check for a typo and for a letter placed in both a green and a gray box.
Everything happens in your browser. The list loads only when you open this page, and your clues are never sent anywhere.
Tips for solving faster
- Use early guesses to test many common letters at once rather than trying to win immediately.
- When several candidates differ by only one letter (like
batch, catch, hatch, latch), guess a word that tests several of those letters instead of guessing one at a time. - Pay attention to double letters. If gray appears for a letter you guessed twice, the word contains that letter only as many times as it was marked green or yellow.
- Try to solve on your own first and use the tool to check what you missed afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official word list of any game?
No. It is our own list of 3,603 common five-letter English words. It is not an official answer list and may miss valid words or include ones your game rejects.
How do I enter a letter that is yellow in two positions?
Type the letter in both yellow boxes, one for each position where it did not belong. You can also add it to the "Also in the word" field once.
Why is a gray letter still allowed in the results?
If the same letter is green, yellow or listed as present elsewhere, the solver treats it as present. Gray feedback on a repeated letter means there are no more copies than the green and yellow marks show, but the solver does not enforce that limit.
What do the numbers next to the suggestions mean?
It is the frequency score: the sum, over the word's distinct letters, of how many remaining candidates contain that letter. Higher scores mean the guess splits the remaining words more usefully.
Does it work for puzzles with other word lengths?
This tool is built for five-letter words. For other lengths, try the letter tile word finder, which handles words from 2 to 8 letters.
Is my input saved or uploaded?
No. All filtering happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
